Zermatt isn't a place you just pop over to. It's that feeling when you open the curtains in the morning and suddenly there it is: the iconic triangle in front of you, the Matterhorn. Almost surreal. Almost too perfect.
And even though Switzerland is really ultra-expensive for ordinary people, Zermatt is one of the places that belongs on the bucket list.

Zermatt slows down with high-end luxury
The small village of Zermatt is n't loud, it isn't over the top, but rather chilled out in a quiet, almost surreal way. Surrounded by over 30 peaks over 4,000 meters high, it looks like a perfect film set that couldn't possibly be real. I was in Zermatt in December, right in the middle of the ski season, and I was truly captivated. I traveled by train , by the way – in Switzerland, all connections are almost always on time, and the extensive rail network makes it easy to reach the special sights. Zermatt is car-free and relaxed. There's a small train station, electric taxis, and chalets that look like they've been plucked from a Pinterest board. At the same time, the place also has a touch of high-end luxury – with stylish hotels, fine dining, and an international crowd that knows exactly why they're there.
The small town is a magnet for stars
Zermatt isn't just a hotspot for mountain lovers and skiers – it's also a real magnet for celebrities. International stars are constantly drawn to this small mountain village – Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and David Beckham, among others, have all been here. Especially during the winter season, Zermatt becomes one of those places where you could theoretically bump into a global superstar at après-ski – completely relaxed and without any fuss. Simply because Switzerland offers privacy, exclusive chalets, and high-end hotels.
The Matterhorn – the most beautiful backdrop in the Alps
Right in the middle: the Matterhorn! Iconic, majestic, and somehow a little dramatic, no matter the time of day. At 4,478 meters, it's one of the most famous mountains in the world. And yes, it really does look exactly like the postcards – only a bit more intense. The best views aren't necessarily from the village, but from spots like Gornergrat or Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. If you don't want to go quite so high, the hike towards the Klein Matterhorn is perfectly fine.
A few kilometers is all it takes. When you then gaze up at the mountain, you're overcome by a feeling that's hard to describe: the sun warms your face, and you look out over this perfect panorama. In that moment, it becomes clear why people from all over the world come here. It's simply magnificent.

Zermatt is one of the largest and most snow-sure ski resorts in Europe. The ski area stretches from Switzerland into Italy (where prices are somewhat lower).
Current ski pass prices (2025/26 season):
You can find the prices here: Matterhorn Paradise

Up to the Matterhorn – the difference between small vs. large
Klein Matterhorn (touristy & easy)
The Klein Matterhorn is the easy option. You comfortably take the cable car up, stand at almost 4,000 meters, and are rewarded with this incredible panorama. It's the perfect spot for anyone who wants to take unforgettable photos without having to exert themselves too much.
Great Matterhorn (only for experienced mountaineers)
The Matterhorn itself – the large, iconic one – is in a completely different league. It's not a stroll, not a viewpoint, but one of the most challenging mountain tours in the Alps. Steep, exposed, extremely physically demanding, and only truly feasible with a guide. Not suitable for sandals or flip-flops ;). The cost is approximately CHF 1,500–3,000+. The ascent can be planned for two days.
